Streetly Academy team raise over £8000 for the Stroke Association

A team comprising students, parents, and teachers from Streetly Academy, has raised £8133 for the Stroke Association [West Midlands].

“In early 2022, 51-year-old Aaron Mckeown, father of our current head girl Evie, suffered a stroke. As a result, he lost the use of one side of his body and the sight in his left eye. He was unable to drive and had to take time away from his roofing business.
“Thankfully, Aaron is back driving and has returned to work and is expected to make a full recovery.
“Evie approached me at school and asked if it was possible for the school to raise money for the Stroke Association as the charity had supported her dad and the family following his stroke.
“She specifically asked if the money raised via participation in the Fun Run could be donated to the Stroke Association.
“The school was more than happy to select the Stroke Association as its chosen charity for 2023.
“Evie and her family have been the driving force behind the school team raising £8133 for the charity and although Aaron was keen to participate this year, Lisa his wife felt that was one step too far in his recovery.”
Lucy Burnip, Relationship Fundraiser for the Midlands at the Stroke Association, said: “We want to say a huge thank you to the amazing Evie and the Streetly Academy team for raising such an incredible amount of money for the charity. When stroke strikes, it changes lives in an instant as is the case with Aaron and his family, so we’re over the moon to hear that Aaron is making such a great recovery – we wish him and his family all the best.
“There are over 100,000 strokes each year and 1.3 million stroke survivors living in the UK today, with these numbers only set to grow. As a charity we work across the UK to support people to rebuild their lives after stroke. It’s only through the incredible generosity of Evie and everyone involved at Streetly Academy, that we can continue to help people thrive not just survive after a stroke.”
Fun Run Director, Nicola Davies said: “Streety Academy is a shining beacon of what can be achieved through participation in the Fun Run. Not only can the students, teachers and parents of all ages and abilities engage is an out of school activity together, but the students can gain an appreciation of the huge personal & community benefits of fundraising and helping others less fortunate than themselves.
“Streetly Academy has raised close to £27,000 over the last three Royal Sutton Fun Run’s, which Is a fantastic achievement, and they should be very proud of their fundraising.”

Online registration for the 41st Royal Sutton Fun Run opens over the first weekend of February with the event due to be staged on Sunday 2nd June 2024. Places will be limited to 5500.
