Paul, who had been diagnosed with dementia, was referred to Birmingham Hospice for end-of-life care following a major stroke.

Paul’s sons Paulie & Philip, along with eight friends, took on the challenge of completing the 8.5-mile Fun Run course with the intention of raising £10,000, as a way of thanking the hospice for the care and support shown to their dad.

Paul’s wife, Sharon Craig said: “When Paulie & Philip set an initial target to raise £10,000, I felt they were being ambitious, but they said, ‘let’s aim high’.

“Through the generosity of family, our friends & work colleagues, we reached an astonishing £33,388. It’s our way of being able to thank the hospice for its wonderful support and care of Paul and the family.

“They made Paul’s final days as comfortable and calm as possible, ensuring he left with dignity and at peace. The wonderful staff showed the family just as much care & compassion as they showed him, which allowed me to feel like a wife again and make precious memories together during the time we had left.

“They let us create a ‘home’ for Paul, and ensured he was as comfortable as possible. He left this life as he had lived it; peacefully, with dignity, and surrounded by love.

Jess Turner, Community Campaign & Digital Fundraising Manager, Birmingham Hospice said: “On behalf of all the staff, volunteers, and patients at Birmingham Hospice, we can’t thank the family enough for raising such a phenomenal total.

“Birmingham Hospice is currently in a funding crisis. Lack of funding means we are struggling to keep up with spiralling costs.

“The money raised from the Royal Sutton Fun Run is crucial in ensuring we can continue to be there for patients and their families as they receive expert, compassionate and personalised end-of-life care. Thank you so much!”
